The 1875 Page Act prohibited the immigration of Chinese women because they were seen to be potential prostitutes. From Mary Yee

57:42
Also US military bases in Asia have been responsible for the stereotypes of Asian women as sex workers and as submissive “others.” This experience may be the first and only one with Asian women for many US military men. Mary

Related to Brother Malcolm’s insights is Steve Biko’s statement: “The greatest weapon in the hand of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed.” Cliff will recognize this. This pertains to the negative self-image that many BIPOC+ folks harbor. Mary

01:10:09
Good points Peter! It is very true like you said how if roles were reveresed within treatment for white women that it would be put to an immediate stop. Unfortunately, within the Asian community it is still an ongoing cycle to where innocent people are getting mistreated and that the change isn’t ending as quickly.

01:10:16
It's sooo good to hear this eloquent explanation. Even in our on-campus "whiteness" sessions did not understand that "whiteness" is not limited to white/black relations. I hope people will learn from this important educational presentation.

01:11:46
I have to go to an advising appt, but I wanted to say thanks for a great panel. Also, I’d be interested to hear and talk more about this “model minority” stereotype/myth, as I think we really face it in education, the idea that Asian and Asian-American students have a “special/unfair advantage.”

01:14:11
Thank you for a great moving session. I am learning a lot and plan to seek out other cultures and how they live.

01:14:45

Folks at UPenn have started a Solidarity Series to deal with racism, history, and healing in the context of Black-Asian community relations. We welcome folks from other communities and neighborhoods. Peter is one of the Solidarity Team; I am also. From Mary Yee
